The Pet Sitting Checklist for a More Relaxed Trip

The best time to explain your pet's routine is before your suitcase is in the car. A short written plan helps keep days familiar while you're away.

Start with the everyday details

Write down meal times and amounts, where food is kept, how to refresh water, and what a normal potty or litter routine looks like. Include the names of every pet, where they like to hide, what toys they enjoy, and what behavior would be unusual for them.

For dogs, note their leash, harness, walking route, and any household doors or gates that need special care. For cats and smaller pets, show your sitter where supplies are stored and how you prefer their space cleaned.

Make an emergency plan

The ASPCA recommends leaving your travel itinerary, a way to reach you, a backup contact, your regular veterinarian, and the nearest emergency clinic. If a pet takes medication, leave clear written instructions for the name, dose, and timing, and review them together before you go.

Tell your veterinarian who may make decisions if you can't be reached. Keep medication and supplies in a place your sitter can find, but pets can't access on their own.

Do a quick home walk-through

Show the sitter the key or entry code, alarm instructions, cleaning supplies, waste disposal, and where to leave lights or blinds. A meet-and-greet lets you talk through shy-pet introductions and any house rules. Then you can head out knowing the little things have been covered.
