Rainy Day? Your Dog Can Still Have a Very Good Day

Your dog has opinions about the weather. Some would happily splash through every puddle. Others take one look outside and file a formal complaint. Either way, a wet Southern Maryland day can still include a little fun.

Give that busy nose a job

Start with a tiny treasure hunt. With your dog watching, place a few pieces of their usual food in easy-to-find spots in one safe room, then invite them to search. Keep the food within reach and away from anything they could knock over. If food games do not suit their diet or household, use a familiar toy instead.

The ASPCA includes scent games in its canine enrichment guidance. The useful idea is simple: a dog can investigate and think without charging around the house. Keep the first round easy, supervise, and stop while your dog is still enjoying it. Any food used for games belongs in their daily food allowance, rather than becoming a surprise second dinner.

Keep play simple, safe, and optional

Try a short round of a cue your dog already knows, a gentle toy game, or a supervised puzzle they have used before. You do not need an elaborate obstacle course. A few pleasant minutes with you can be the highlight.

Choose a surface with good footing and put away toys that can be swallowed or torn apart. Skip running games on slippery floors. If your dog would rather settle beside you, that is information too. Enrichment should fit their interests, age, and comfort; it should not become another task they have to pass.

A weather-adjusted visit still has a purpose

Potty needs do not disappear with the sunshine. When conditions are safe, a brief outdoor break followed by indoor attention may make more sense than a long soggy march. Thunderstorms and other unsafe conditions deserve a different plan altogether.
